Cows, Sheep & Goats

We always stock a big range of hard and soft, British and foreign cow, sheep and goat milk cheeses. There is a big range of tastes, from strong to very mild, so much so these days that there’s no distinctive “goaty taste” with most goat cheeses.

We don’t give medical advice. If you want to change your diet for medical reasons, see a doctor first and follow his or her guidance. But if they say they don’t know of any differences between cow, sheep and goat milk, you should ask them again. There are big differences.  As with any other food, too much is not good for you.

We meet a lot of people saddened that they cannot eat cheese after being told they should not eat “dairy” products. It’s not surprising; it’s one of those inane shorthand words that people use to try to appear knowing when in fact it can mean anything at all. The milk came from a dairy? And that’s where you get cows. But what about sheep? Or goats? Is that milk from a dairy too?

Often what’s meant by “dairy” and “milk” are two different things. Any milk can cause allergies, but it is interesting to count the number of publications there are about reactions to cow, goat and ewe’s milk.
